Commercial Basement Waterproofing Work

Location: Howarth Ave, Scarborough, ON M1R 1H4 (Saint Jude Anglican Church)

Sales Representative: Tony Novara

The client contacted The City Wide Group requesting a professional basement waterproofing estimate for the church property located at 10 Howarth Ave. The primary concern was potential water intrusion originating from aging foundation components. Following an on-site inspection, basement waterproofing was recommended to protect the building’s lower level from moisture infiltration and to ensure long-term structural durability.

The proposed scope of work includes approximately 83 linear feet (LF) of interior and/or exterior basement waterproofing, as well as the supply and installation of a Liberty sump pump system to improve overall water management.

 Scope of Work

  • Approximately 83 LF of basement waterproofing to address moisture risks along the affected portion of the foundation.
  • Supply and install Liberty sump pump to improve interior water evacuation and reduce hydrostatic pressure.
  • Ensure long-term foundation protection through proper membrane, drainage, and sump pump integration.

 Challenges

  • Foundation sections showed signs of moisture exposure, requiring careful excavation (if exterior) or controlled interior access to avoid disruption to church operations.
  • Maintaining safe access for parishioners and staff during work activities.
  • Sump pump discharge routing must comply with municipal guidelines and site layout.

 Solution and Implementation Process

  1. Site Preparation
    • Work area marked and secured to maintain safe pedestrian and vehicle access around the church.
    • Utility locates completed in advance to identify underground services.
    • Interior areas cleared as required to allow for trenching and sump pump installation.

  1. Excavation / Interior Trenching
    • For waterproofing: excavated soil (exterior) or interior slab trenching performed to expose approximately 83 LF of foundation.
    • Excavation conducted with care around structural components and existing building utilities.

  1. Foundation Preparation
    • Exposed foundation cleaned to remove dirt, loose concrete, and debris.
    • Parging repairs performed as needed to ensure a smooth surface for the waterproofing system.

  1. Waterproofing System Installation
    • Installation of a high-performance waterproofing membrane to create a durable barrier against moisture penetration.
    • Drainage board installed to protect the membrane and redirect water efficiently.
    • This stage reinforces the protection objectives of the basement waterproofing process.

  1. Drainage & Sump Pump Installation
    • Installed new 4” perforated weeping tile with filter fabric to prevent clogging and ensure continuous drainage.
    • Clean ¾” gravel added to promote proper water flow.
    • Liberty sump pump system supplied and installed in a designated sump basin.
    • Pump discharge line routed safely to an approved exterior location.

  1. Backfilling and Clean-Up
    • Backfilled excavated areas (if exterior) using native soil in compacted layers.
    • Interior work areas cleaned, and concrete slab restored where trenches were opened.
    • All materials, soil, and debris removed from the site.

 Conclusion

Basement waterproofing was recommended and planned for approximately 83 LF of foundation at 10 Howarth Ave, Scarborough, to ensure long-term protection for Saint Jude Anglican Church. The installation of a durable waterproofing membrane, upgraded drainage components, and a Liberty sump pump provides effective moisture control and significantly reduces the risk of future water infiltration.

These improvements will help preserve the building’s structural integrity and provide reliable protection for the church’s lower level for years to come.
