Exterior Waterproofing Work
Location: Talbot St, Hamilton, ON
Sales Representative: Patrick Misko
The client contacted The City Wide Group regarding foundation concerns and signs of water infiltration. Upon inspection, it was determined that exterior waterproofing was required.
Challenges
-
Gas meter and line in the required waterproofing area.
-
Existing damage and gaps were identified between the foundation and brickwork.
-
The existing waterproofing membrane was broken and no longer functional.
-
Several 4-inch nails were found improperly installed, penetrating through the wall and compromising the waterproofing integrity.
Solution and Implementation Process
Site Preparation
-
The work area was clearly marked and secured to ensure safe excavation and work conditions.
-
All necessary utility locates were obtained prior to the start of excavation.
Excavation
-
Excavated soil down to the footing level to fully expose approximately 28 linear feet (LF) of the foundation wall.
-
Excavation depth reached approximately 5.5 feet to provide full access for repair and waterproofing.
Foundation Preparation
-
Once the foundation walls were exposed, the crew brushed and scraped the walls to remove all soil, debris, and loose material.
-
Concrete parged the foundation wall and footing with a Portland/polymer concrete mix where required to restore a smooth, sealed surface.
Waterproofing System Installation
-
Applied rubber bitumen membrane (BlueSkin WP200) as the primary waterproofing layer.
-
Installed a drainage membrane (Delta MS) over the surface to protect the waterproofing and promote vertical drainage.
Drainage System Installation
-
Removed the existing weeping tile and installed a new 4” perforated weeping tile with filter screening around the perimeter of the waterproofed walls.
-
Placed the weeping tiles at footing level and surrounded them with clean ¾” gravel to direct water efficiently toward the drainage connection.
Backfilling and Restoration
-
Backfilled the excavated area with native soil, compacting in layers to minimize future settling.
-
Gentle backfilled the excavated area closed to the gas meter.
-
Cleaned up and removed all excess soil and debris from the worksite.
Conclusion
Exterior waterproofing was successfully completed at 423 Talbot St, Hamilton. The repairs addressed the damaged and compromised areas, replaced the defective membrane, and removed improperly placed fasteners. The newly installed BlueSkin WP200 and Delta MS system, along with the new weeping tile, ensures effective drainage and long-term protection of the foundation against water infiltration and structural damage.
